Dear editor: I am a new long-term occasional teacher at Fort Frances High School and I am involved in the current strike. Since I began my position at the beginning of the second semester, I have spent more than 100 hours costuming for the musical, “Les Misérables,” and worked with […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
Dear editor: I must start out by thanking Duane Hicks for his article in last Wednesday’s Times, “Fire chief taking new job.” This letter, though, is dedicated to the men and women of the Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service. These proud and devoted people merit a special thank you. […]
Dear sir: Mr. Watt’s comments (regarding occasional teachers) that appeared in last Wednesday’s Times, while clear and concise, were, regrettably, also misinformed. Because everyone has attended school at one time or another, everyone feels they can meaningfully comment on the educational system. But unless one actually has donned the robe […]
Dear editor: As a teacher with the Rainy River District School Board, I am disheartened with the way that occasional teachers are being treated in their attempts at a fair contract settlement. These teachers are a necessary part of the education system, filling in for absent classroom teachers in every […]
Dear Mr. Editor: The volition of this writer (witness) is to show the contradicting use of the word “democracy” by the leaders and politicians. Thinking, observing, and a little research will reveal to anyone that “things are not as they appear.” Not a day goes by without the leaders and […]
Dear editor: Double-dipping has just “risen” to a new low. The secondary school occasional teachers, who are all in receipt of generous pensions, feel that $197.22 is not enough for a day of glorified babysitting. If they like the classroom so much, why did they retire early as soon as […]
Dear editor: A lot of people can’t understand how we came to have an oil shortage in Canada. Well, there’s a simple answer. Nobody bothered to check the oil. We just didn’t know we were getting low. And the reason for that is purely geographical. You see, our oil is […]
Hi Mike: You’re absolutely right (re “We cannot waver,” April 12). In for a penny or in for a pound. Being a little bit at war is like being a little bit pregnant. The rules of engagement were laid down nearly five years ago when a bunch of fanatics used […]
Dear editor: Probably very few of the general public are aware of the fact that the Rainy River secondary school occasional teachers (supply teachers) are on strike against the local public school board. Probably even fewer care that they have been working without a contract since August, 2004. They are […]
Dear editor: I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all the members of my choir, the “Choraliers.” This is a community and area choir made up of volunteers from all walks of life. Many of us have been together for about 12 years (it’s hard to keep […]
Dear Mr. Editor: Thanks to the outrageous closed-door policy and hidden agendas of our elected town council, every taxpayer reading this is in serious trouble. The action of a few councillors to ram the purchase of the old Fort Frances Clinic, and asking the Ministry of Health to impose rostering […]
Dear Mike: I must congratulate all who were involved with the “Les Misérables” production at the Townshend Theatre last week. I am still in awe over the powerful performances, the music, and, of course, the highly-organized quality of the show. They truly have outdone themselves! I can only imagine the […]
