To the editor: The very possibility of Wal-Mart in our area, anywhere, is dismaying, frustrating, and frightening. Both Fort Frances and International Falls will suffer the loss of a number of businesses, since that behemoth’s very attitude is to sink the little guy who can’t compete. Folks think that all […]

Dear sir: I would like to reply to Kevin Cherry’s letter of Dec. 11, 2002. What this letter appears to be is another example of the whiz kids from Toronto again telling the country bumpkins from Northwestern Ontario what is good for them. I think the people of Fort Frances […]
Dear editor: What is Wal-Mart going to do for our town? Sure, it will provide minimum wage jobs, but at what expense? Ask the Salvation Army. Three weeks ago in Toronto, Wal-Mart kicked the Salvation Army people off its property. They stated Wal-Mart has a “no solicitation” policy for a […]
Dear sir: Hi, this is the old guy with the plaid tam again (well, you know the rest). And yes, I’ve put the bike away for the winter. I was thinking back to the year 1935 or 1937, when my brother, Norman, and I walked a team of horses from […]
Dear sir: This letter is addressed to the person or persons responsible for the theft of my black nylon wallet containing $1,200 cash, a certified cheque, and personal documents from the Super 8 Motel in Fort Frances on the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 12. I want you to know that […]
Dear editor: In regards to maybe an American Wal-Mart store opening in Fort Frances. Why can’t it be a Zeller’s store, owned by Hudson Bay Company, or maybe a Canadian super store if the plans are to have a large store here? I also would like to comment on how […]
Still waiting Dear Mr. Editor: When will all businesses in town become smoke-free, Bingo halls included, to protect all people? Isn’t smoking in public a fineable offence? We look to you, Mr. Editor, for a definitive answer. Signed, Al Peterson and Bob Gillon
Dear editor: I just received my copy of the Fort Frances Times and read about Glen Edwards resigning as head coach of the Muskie boys’ hockey team. I, like many, am surprised by “Grapes’” decision. I don’t want to know his reasons and respect him for his decision. Playing for […]
Hi Mike, At this time, I would like to congratulate Jean and Lin Boileau on being selected as Citizens of the Year for Fort Frances in 2002. I grew up seeing Jean busy with the plays and Lin walking faster than his feet could keep up to him going to […]
The release of the Romanow report on the future of Canada’s health care was positively received by the Canadian population. The infusion of fiscal resources into our health care is always positive. But the report was not specific in identifying how much of the $15 billion is going to be […]
Dear editor: In response to questions about the sign on the roadside at 1021 River Rd. W. that reads “Daniel Biddeson 1873.” Daniel Biddeson, born in Birmingham, England, came to Canada in the 1860s, settling in eastern Ontario. A steam engineer, he was approached by Hugh Sutherland, representing the Dominion […]
Dear sir: This is an open letter to the residents of Fort Frances and Rainy River District. I am a former resident. I left eight years ago to find employment and have never looked back—that is until now. At the recent news of a possible Wal-Mart opening, my husband and […]
