Why does Frank Miclash not want Kenora-Rainy River tourist outfitters to take advantage of one of the most lucrative markets in tourism? In a recent press release, Frank ridicules the minister of natural resources for suggesting tourist operators take advantage of the burgeoning field of bird watching. But if Frank […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
Dear sir: Banning the spring bear hunt is political as much as all government decisions are political but preventing cubs from being orphaned is not a “sell-out to special interests like environmentalists.” Environmentalists are no more a special interest group than are tourist operators. And, if the ban is “electioneering […]
Dear sir: I played for the Fort Frances Muskies hockey team from 1982-86. We had a lot of success, winning gold at the All-Ontario championship in 1986. I had the opportunity to be on a team with great players, but more importantly, great people. One player I remember well was […]
Dear sir: Once again, I and several others attended what has become a regular 7 p.m. Friday session at the Salvation Army Citadel on the so-called Year 2000 bug. The sessions stress preparing for possible “Y2K” emergencies. Those who are prepared will be less of a burden on any emergency […]
Dear sir: Only a few short weeks ago, we faced the daunting task of raising $300,000 to complete our community’s commitment of raising $1.2 million for our new Rainy River health facility. Well, folks, we did it! Not as a single group, town, or organization but a collection of individuals […]
Dear sir: I felt compelled to issue a response to a letter to the editor written last week on the ongoing “hockey school conflict.” I have to agree with Mr. Mihichuk for wanting the contents of the letter signed by the mayor to be honoured. First of all, this town […]
To the editor: I am compelled to write this letter in regards to the Borderland Hockey School and the negative feelings that have surfaced regarding Mr. Mihichuk’s letter from the mayor. I have known Mr. Terry Mihichuk for over 15 years and have personnel knowledge into his efforts to improve […]
To the editor: The last time I checked, Canada was still a democracy. Fort Frances, however, is starting to feel a little like the former Soviet Union. In my opinion, the “Office of the Mayor” has no right to grant exclusive rights to any business or person to provide a […]
Dear sir: The Chapple Heritage Committee in Barwick wishes to invite former residents to our 100th anniversary as a municipality. Chapple Centennial Weekend will be held from Friday evening, July 30, 1999 to Monday morning, Aug. 2, 1999. Full information packages, including a tentative itinerary, accommodation listings, and registration forms, […]
Dear sir: I mentioned to a friend that I attended the Friday, Jan. 8 public meeting on the “Y2K” problem at the Salvation Army Citadel. My friend asked me if I had been converted? The session was not about religion but an information session on “Y2K” (which, by the way, […]
Dear editor: Here we go again! Let’s have the Town of Fort Frances run a feasibility study now on hockey schools! What do they have to do with it anyway? We, as parents, decide if, where, and when our children go to hockey school. We’ll be missing a golden opportunity […]
Dear sir: I am writing in response to a request from a resident of Marble, Mn. who is searching for information concerning a family connection in the Rainy River District. The person concerned is Art (Arthur?) Pelkey. He may have lived on Rainy Lake, and at some point returned to […]
