To the editor:
The last time I checked, Canada was still a democracy. Fort Frances, however, is starting to feel a little like the former Soviet Union.
In my opinion, the “Office of the Mayor” has no right to grant exclusive rights to any business or person to provide a service such as a hockey school. Each taxpayer in Fort Frances should have the equal right to rent ice time at our public arena, or any other public facility.
What makes this matter even more distasteful is that Mr. Mihichuk would not even have this letter if he had not purchased it from Mr. Lindberg. Would the “Office of the Mayor” have produced this guarantee for Mr. Mihichuk in the first place?
If so, how many others have this unfair advantage in Fort Frances?
My son attended Mr. Mihichuk’s hockey school for the first time last summer. He loved every minute of it and wants to attend again this year. If I was in Mr. Mihichuk’s position, I would welcome friendly competition knowing that I was providing an excellent service to the kids in our community.
Council should not forget that this is about our kids playing hockey and we should be providing them with every opportunity they deserve–not lawyers, in-camera sessions, and more political interference!

Cindy Buttner
