Dear editor: I was looking forward to receiving my newspaper [last] week so that I could learn more about the spill at the Abitibi-Consolidated kraft mill. I was extremely disappointed to find that this story was not covered. People outside of Fort Frances don’t normally receive your Daily Bulletin. Your […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
Dear editor: I would like to congratulate Charlie Turgeon and Abitibi-Consolidated on the fine job they did with the fire extinguisher course. This four-hour, hands-on information session was offered free of charge to the community. The materials and training area were provided by Abitibi, and Charlie Turgeon volunteered his expertise […]
Dear editor: Please accept this open letter to Natural Resources minister John Snobelen and Finance minister Jim Flaherty. Dear ministers: I have received a number of letters from tourist lodge owners throughout Northwestern Ontario complaining that cabin owners are operating unlicensed underground tourist resorts. The tourist lodge owners point out […]
Dear Mr. Behan: I would like to take this opportunity to respond to Mr. Bekeris’ comments regarding the dialysis unit that was published in last week’s Times. Yes, indeed, Mr. Bekeris, I have heard of the nursing shortage. Have you heard of end stage renal failure? Those facing this condition […]
Dear editor: I’d like to answer John Bekeris’ letter of last week about our new hemo-dialysis unit being a costly “handout.” Right now, we have about 20 patients going elsewhere for this service. One person I know the government, through OHIP, pays them $112 per trip. This gives them about […]
Dear sir: I just want to say congratulations to the cast and crew of the play “Anna Karenina.” Because of the labour dispute between the teachers and the Ontario government, it was necessary for the students to take ownership of the production–and they did a fantastic job! A special note […]
Dear sir: When I first immigrated to Canada, I was surprised how few government services were available to the people. On the other hand, I found the inhabitants of Rainy River District were neighbourly and tried to help in every way possible. During the next few years, governments did bring […]
Dear Mr. Behan: On Thursday, May 3, I, along with other vested parties (ISP operators, large business, local media, etc. that have strong need for reliable high-speed Internet access), was invited to the Bell Canada informational meeting at the Civic Centre. Based on the press release, we assumed the public […]
Dear editor: Your newspaper’s coverage of the ongoing dilemma of having a dialysis unit in Fort Frances prompts me to comment. The cost of such a machine versus the benefit of a few who might use it doesn’t add up. Spending thousands of dollars to accommodate a few seems a […]
Dear editor: Contrary to Conservative government claims, the coming and future electricity price increases have nothing to do with clearing past debt. As Energy minister Jim Wilson has said repeatedly, and to a television audience again just weeks ago, the cost of retiring hydro’s debt is already built into our […]
To the editor: One morning last week, on my way to work, there were children waiting at the crosswalk in front of Alexander MacKenzie School. The crossing guard was waiting for traffic to slow down before she entered the crosswalk. I stopped my car to let the children cross and […]
Dear editor: Working for the local unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, I have had the privilege of seeing the generous spirit of people in our community–and it is truly inspiring. For example, the recent “Curl for Cancer” raised more than $10,000 to help find a cure. I am cautious […]
