It is a matter of life and death. Smoking and non-smoking. Why the argument in the district to continue to smoke publicly? Is smoking the reason Fort Frances and district has the highest number of cancer patients? Those voting for continuing public smoking, defying the knowledge, honest concern, and advice […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
Dear sir: I follow with interest the anti-smoking campaign in which your paper is involved. In my opinion, there is enough information out there that should scare people to avoid the habit. There are lots of people killed through the use of alcohol or through the use of the highways, […]
Dear sir: I really appreciated the piece in the newspaper by Harry Vandetti entitled “They’re gone, but not forgotten” (F.F. Times, March 6/02). Several years ago, you ran a piece about me in regard to a show that I had produced re: “The Ed Sullivan Show Reunion” starring Carroll Burnett. […]
Dear sir: It is with much interest that I have been following the smoking bylaw debate. I find it to often be the topic of discussion, wherever I go, including our local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Emo. I have to wonder why the Northwestern Health Unit sent […]
To the editor: The now well-established fact that second-hand smoke is hazardous should, in itself, be sufficient to bring about prohibition of smoking in public places. Any possible problems in implementing such prohibition can be readily overcome. Many of the objections to the passing of municipal no-smoking bylaws appear to […]
Dear editor: There was a time when I was quite proud to work for the Ministry of Natural Resources. Now I am not so sure. It has been a long and rocky road of downsizing, privatization, and starving budgets since 1992. The Harris regime has added yet another round of […]
Dear editor: Re: No-smoking bylaw Seven years ago, I seized an opportunity to build a business in Emo and provide service (i.e., convenience store) for the community and surrounding area. I relied solely on the continued support of my husband, family, hard work, long hours, and my customers to make […]
To the editor: I would like to make a few observations/comments regarding the current smoking/no smoking battle being waged in the Kenora/Rainy River districts. It appears to me the solution is a no-brainer, not all “public” places should be non-smoking. Restaurants/dining rooms should be smoke-free as there quite often are […]
Dear editor, Re: “Flaherty only supporter of north, says supporter” (Feb. 27, 2002) I was surprised to read Craig Nuttall’s letter comparing the political records of Jim Flaherty and Ernie Eves in the race to become the next leader of the PC party and premier of Ontario. Mr. Nuttall attacks […]
Dear sir: Whatever happened to people having a choice on how they live their life? I am a smoker. I have been going for coffee every day for years with a group of friends at a restaurant that used to be smoking but is now smoke-free. I still go to […]
Dear editor: On Monday morning, I heard an unsettling news item on CBC Radio. It was reported that a scientific study has found we can expect to have yearly infestations of forest tent caterpillars in Northwestern Ontario. The reason given was that the insects and viruses that can keep the […]
Dear sir: There seems to be a controversy growing over whether or not parents who choose to educate their children outside the public education system should be allowed a tax credit. I think it’s a small step in the right direction. It is ultimately parents’ responsibility that their children are […]
