I have been following the smoking/non-smoking debate in Fort Frances with great interest. Having been born and raised in Fort Frances, and returning yearly as I do, I feel I am justified in putting my opinion forward. I have the luxury of perspective in the case of discussing smoking bans […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
Dear sir: In recognition of International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8, I would like to acknowledge a group of women I have been working with for the past several years. That group is the Fort Frances Native Women’s Association. This small group of dedicated women has managed to […]
To the editor: Early last week, I had the opportunity to attend the PC party leadership debate in Thunder Bay and get an impression of the five candidates vying for the premier’s seat vacated this past fall by Mike Harris. During one of the many exchanges in the debate, I […]
Dear sir: On June 2, 2002, Ignace will be celebrating the centennial of Mary Berglund’s birth. Mary died on June 22, 1995 but her legacy lives on in Ignace’s Mary Berglund Community Health Centre. Mary was a registered nurse, but her duties were far beyond that of a nurse. In […]
Dear sir: A report commissioned by the federal government underscores the Ontario government’s call for dependable security and the free-flow of goods between the Canada-U.S. border. This is vital to the future of trade between our two countries. The study, “The Canada-U.S. Border: An Automotive Case Study,” focuses on the […]
Dear sir: Hi, this is Bob, the old guy with the plaid tam, attempting to share an experience with fellow Canadians, and more specifically, my district and Emo friends. Now, normally, I wouldn’t tell everyone this, but I feel that I should—despite the outcome and knowing that there will be […]
Dear editor: I have followed with interest the smoking bylaw debate, and I am saddened by the stand the majority of our local politicians are taking on this issue. The most common response seems to be that even if passed, a smoking bylaw will lack the teeth to enforce it. […]
Dear editor: We certainly live in changing times! Of course, time has always brought change. With change, we are faced with new opportunities. What the present generation decides will set the course for the generations to come. On behalf of the Alberton Central School, I’d like to express some views. […]
Dear editor: I am dismayed the Rainy River District School Board has decided to go ahead with its school closure process and is still including Alberton Central School. They are doing this even though the Alberton school closure sub-committee recommended the school stay open. It’s nice to see the RRDSB […]
Dear editor: At the very beginning, Olympic sports were for amateurs only and it stayed that way for a very long time until political measures crept into the system allowing professionals to participate, thus making it a mixture of amateurs competing against the pros. This surely degrades what the Olympics […]
Dear editor, On Friday, CBQ radio station out of Thunder Bay ran a news story about the smoke-free bylaw campaign that is happening in our region. The mayor of Dryden was interviewed and stated the high return rate of the postcards did not impress him, as he already knew that […]
An open letter to Environment minister Elizabeth Witmer Dear minister, Since your government stopped supporting recycling across the province, you have left municipalities on the hook for the entire costs. Throughout the province, recycling programs are in jeopardy. If your government does not act now and provide some interim funding […]
