Dear sir: I am writing to express my thoughts about the recent decision of the Ontario Court of Appeal on June 10 that declared the historic definition of “marriage” unconstitutional. The definition of marriage in Canada, for all of the nation’s 136 years, has been based on the classic formulation […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
Dear sir: My wife is a granddaughter of the Hon. Peter Heenan. On July 1, 1936 in Fort Frances, then Ontario Premier Mitchell Hepburn opened the highway between Fort Frances and Kenora and named it the “Heenan Highway.” In 2001, my wife and I visited Peter Heenan’s hometown, Kenora, and […]
Dear editor: This past month, Jim Cumming, the publisher of the Fort Frances Times, completed his term as president of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA). As the president of the CCNA, Jim has volunteered his time to represent the interests of nearly 900 local newspapers, which tell the stories […]
Dear sir: Imagine sitting at your computer when all of a sudden you hear a thundering crash coming from your bathroom? You run down the hallway to find that your daughter has fallen through the bathroom floor after stepping out of the shower. Her leg is still stuck, she struggles […]
Dear sir: Friday, June 6 may have been just a normal day for some, but for the staff and members of the Li’l Eagles centre behind the old high school on First Street East, it was a very busy time preparing fish, salads, and pies for that evening’s fundraiser supper. […]
Dear sir: On Dec. 18/02, a letter to the editor was received by the Fort Frances Times entitled “At what expense.” The content of the letter was opposed to Wal-Mart coming to Fort Frances and signed “S. Hoard.” This letter was not sent in by me, Stan Hoard, who is […]
Dear sir: Well, things just keep getting better and better! While driving home from Thunder Bay and into our lovely town of Fort Frances, I noticed that at the entrance of that end of town on the highway there is a lovely, bright blue sign that says “La Verendrye Parkway.” […]
Greetings: Concerning the letter of J.J. Witherspoon in the May 28 issue of the Times, I was dismayed with the tone—and the attitude of superiority—shown toward Mrs. Teeple. She found Mrs. Teeple’s letter as an example of hate, and yet seems to display hate herself in this attack on her—and […]
Dear sir: I would like to draw attention to a roadway in Miscampbell between Lots No. 4 and 5, Concession No. 1. This roadway was taken off road maintenance and repairs under chairman Jim Gill of the Miscampbell roads board. However, the board neglected to close the entrance, allowing unworthy […]
Dear editor: The Kidney Foundation is pleased to announce that through your kind and generous donations, we have completed a very successful canvass of Fort Frances, Couchiching, and Alberton ($8,500). This year’s theme of “Celebrating the Miracles” has been possible through the assistance of those like you who have made […]
Dear sir: I just wanted to say thank you, on behalf of our hockey club, to Thunder GM Brent Tookenay and his entire organization for putting on an excellent event during this year’s Dudley Hewitt Cup. Mr. Tookenay, please congratulate your entire organization on behalf of our team, as well […]
Dear sir: As much as I support the idea of recreational facilities for young people in Fort Frances, I can’t wait to see this “$300,000 concrete bowl” fill up with glass and other detritus after the first couple of days. I also hope the emergency room is ready for the […]
