Dear editor: Our current Emo council wants to move our town forward by making it an attractive place to live—a place where our children will want to remain. For the most part, they are doing a good job. I do, however, have to question some of the choices that have […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
Dear editor: Wow! The public meeting on Feb. 18 in regards to the proposed abattoir in Emo was sold out. A big thank you to all who made the effort to come out and to get informed about a possible abattoir project in our town. Thank you, also, to all […]
Dear editor: We want to say thank you to all of the people and businesses who have contributed to the “Community Chest.” Recently, when we had to go out of town for medical care, I contacted this group through a phone call to Linda Hamilton. She made a few phone […]
Dear sir: Your newspaper is doing an admirable job of providing news coverage of the despicable video depicting six local high school students mocking native traditions, apparently while under the influence of alcohol. But I am curious why you choose to use quotation marks in referring to the “racist” video? […]
Dear editor: On Feb. 15, aboriginal communities decided to pull their students from Fort Frances High School, citing safety concerns, in response to an overtly racist video that surfaced on the Internet of six female students who made a mockery of aboriginal peoples. Education Director Jack McMaster’s comments that the […]
Dear editor: I have not a computer so, of course, I do not have the Internet and so I did not see what these Muskie girls did. I understand it had nothing to do with their hockey game, so why are they being punished for something they did on their […]
Dear editor: How very sad that these stupid girls acted without thinking, and now their actions have been blown so out of proportion that even gangs from Winnipeg and Thunder Bay have “hits” out on them. Rumour has it that there’s an e-mail going around that the gang members actually […]
Dear editor: I am writing in response to recent media reports regarding the incident involving the young women who produced a video that raised the issue of racism. While I was in Fort Frances over the weekend, it was apparent this occurrence had polarized the community. While some have tried […]
Dear editor: On Wednesday, Feb. 20, the Right Relations Circle of the Rainy River District hosted a gathering to listen to perspectives on the incident at the high school, and to discuss our responsibility in the larger community to model an environment of respect based on solid knowledge of the […]

I am a Sociologist and former Social Policy Analyst for Rainy River First Nations. Throughout the last few years, I […]
Dear editor: There has been a great deal of talk lately; private conversations in churches, schools, and homes. People have been discussing racism and bigotry. We generally have not spoken loudly about these issues in this area, preferring to consider this a non-issue. We no longer can afford ourselves that […]
Dear editor: I attended Emo’s public abattoir meeting Monday night and the residents and the farmers both had some very valid points—for and against the abattoir. I think everybody there agreed an abattoir is needed in the area, but most of Emo’s residents, me included, figure it should be somewhere […]
