Dear editor: Recent letters to the editor concerning Bill 160 have been written by teachers who have been in the game for a while. I thought the public might be interested to hear what a first-year teacher had to say. I graduated from university this past spring with seven years […]
Letters
All newspapers encourage letters to the editor and intend to print the opinions of their readers with as few restrictions as possible. The Fort Frances Times is no exception.
Rules governing letters to the editor in the Fort Frances Times are:
All letters must be signed, and the name of the writer will be printed with all letters published.
The writer must submit his/her letter in person and satisfactory identify themselves, or submit a telephone number to be used to verify that the letter was actually written by the person whose name is included on it, delaying publication if necessary to make the verification.
Letter will not be accepted from people outside the local coverage area unless the letters are written on a topic of primarily local interest.
If a letter attacks another individual or group, the Times will allow a response in the same edition.
Letters should not exceed 300 words and may be edited for length and content.
To the editor, Just a few lines in regards to Arlene Georgeson’s letter in last week’s paper (Oct. 29) about the transit system which was discontinued. Unless you, Arlene, were dependent on the bus for transportation, and unless you had to use it like all the seniors did, you cannot […]
Dear sir: I would like to take a bit of space in your paper to say a few words to the electors. First, I am pleased to see that we are having real elections in Fort Frances. There is some competition for each position. This is good–it means that the […]
In the fall of 1995, we circulated a petition in Fort Frances and Northwestern Ontario. It was directed to the National Parole Board requesting that parole be denied to Neil Scott Soutar, convicted of brutally raping two young women in Fort Frances. At the time, he was the director of […]
Dear sir: The arts, including visual art, dance, drama and music now could be considered extras. The only subjects considered important are language, math and science–because they appear to be the only subjects that get people jobs. I have great fear for our students. There are two things wrong with […]
Dear editor: In the spirit of the season I have composed a little ditty. I’d be obliged if you all would print it. It goes kinda like this . . . Dear Teacher You are Knowledge like a flowing well Toughness like a turtle’s shell More courage than Hercules Your […]
Dear sir: An open letter to the Hon. David Johnson, minister of Education and Training, re: Bill 160–a bill to defraud the students of Ontario of their right to a quality education; a bill designed to concentrate fiscal and decision-making power in the hands of one man based in Toronto. […]
Dear editor: To begin, I would like to thank a close friend of the family for telling me to write this letter. Without his insistence, I may never have had the courage to do this. I am a mother of three and a teacher of many. Last week, I broke […]
Dear sir: An open letter to Mike Harris, premier of Ontario. This letter is sent to you in regards to the consultation meeting on Bill 152, held in Sault Ste. Marie on Oct. 28, 1997. I found it quite upsetting and I had to attend a legislative hearing 950 kms […]
Dear editor: It is a sad commentary on our democratic society when one refrains from making public comment that runs counter to the apparent majority for fear of backlash or reprisals against one’s children. However, after one week of the teacher’s illegal strike and no end in sight, I have […]
Dear sir: On Nov. 10, during the municipal election, we, the voters of Fort Frances, will be given the opportunity to stop the proliferation of gambling in Fort Frances. We will be asked if we support video lottery terminals (VLTs) and the establishment of a charitable gaming club in our […]
Dear sir: I’m really too busy to have to deal with this right now but I can’t sit back and watch our education system go down the toilet. Now that John Snobelen is out of the picture, we can’t use him as a scapegoat any more but now we have […]
