Local News from Across the Rainy River District
With the hockey season shortly coming to an end, there is one more tournament, called “Tony’s” and Tony Bliss invites liniment and recreational teams to participate in his arena fundraiser, tourney and dance this Friday and Saturday. The dance goes from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m., with music by Yowza. […]
As I read the headlines regarding Mark Messier’s sub-par season, I can’t help but remember an old bit from a stand-up comedian. You know, one of those clever “observational humour” types a la Jerry Seinfeld. He said there comes a time in life when you’ve become a little too old […]
Many of us here feel badly about current events in Israel and the continued murder of Jewish people. Our sympathies stem from the friendships experienced in this town with some fine Jewish merchants who certainly were among the founders of our New Atlantis! Now they have all moved away and […]
You gotta love “Plan B.” For all you uninitiated out there, “Plan B” is a curling term used to describe when something good happens from a shot that wasn’t called. For instance, when the skip wants a draw and his third delivers a triple take-out, or angle raise. Or when […]
This year’s World Day of Prayer was held last Friday evening at St. Patrick’s Church, with churches from the local ministerial association all in attendance. The service was written by the Women of Romania, and ladies of each church gave readings. A social hour followed. The annual Pro-Life tea and […]
The hockey community in Powell River probably will be buzzing by April. The town in British Columbia, just northwest of Vancouver, is gearing up to host the 2002 Allan Cup—a showcase of the top senior men’s ‘AAA’ teams from across the country. The host Regals are two-time Allan Cup winners, […]
Growing up in the north country of New York State, I know all about snow. Big snows. Snowblowers, snowballs, and snow forts. White-outs. Witchcraft was never proved! Yet, after the town lost four of its six hotels, and three of them right to the ground, following a year-long rampage by hordes of wild womanhood, our taxpayers were left wondering. Then the papermill erased our embarrassment while swallowing the south side of our business […]
It’s been three days since our Canadian men’s hockey team ended the infamous 50-year drought and finally brought home an Olympic gold medal again. It was a great event and I can honestly say I had—and still get—goosebumps when the Canadian faithful at the E-Center sang “O Canada” during the […]
Emo’s first-ever walleye tournament coming up May 30-June 1 on the magnificent Rainy River is getting a lot of attention of late—even if the event is still three months away. I’m told a few spots remain open. If you’re interested, call Colleen (482-2171) or Dale (482-3093). They both also said […]
Our television set is always tuned to the weather channel. We check the weather with our first cup of coffee in the morning and before we go to bed, and sometimes in between. We’re glued to the weather channel when the spring storms threaten, checking the progress of a tornado […]
When three new banks descended on this town within the same week and we could savour our own “gold rush,” everyone here realized we had somehow or other struck it rich! Else, why this financial flurry, or what’s going on here anyway? By then, of course, everyone was starting to […]
