Fort Frances Little Theatre is staging Tim Firth’s British play, “Calendar Girls,” at Knox United Church here from April 12-15.
The play, based on a true story, first performed in 2009.
“Calendar Girls” is a comedy, with members of Fort Frances Little Theatre saying it’s about friendship, love, and getting old.
The production starts with a group of Women’s Institute members wanting to raise money for their local hospital after one of their husbands dies of leukemia.
The women fundraise through an “alternative” calendar that features them posing nude to help the hospital purchase a new settee in the waiting room.
“It has a serious subject but the way they go about it is sort of humorous,” said troupe member Cynthia Donald.
In keeping with theme of the play, Fort Frances Little Theatre will be donating a portion of the proceeds to a medical cause that’s to be announced.
“Calendar Girls” has been in the works for more than a year now, with auditions first being held in mid-February of last year.
The play is geared towards a mature audience, with its jokes aimed at people over 30 years old, noted Donald.
The cast features a diverse background, and is predominately female with varying levels of experience.
Director Cathy Richards said Fort Frances Little Theatre always is looking for new members, directors, and people behind the scenes.
The local theatre group has 10-15 members who support them and always is looking for fresh faces.
They also are looking for workmen, tradesmen, and electricians to help them redo the flooring and lights in the downstairs section of the Knox United to make it more theatrical.
Fort Frances Little Theatre plans to stage all of its future plays at this venue.
Tickets to “Calendar Girls” cost $15 each, which can be purchased at the Fine Line Art Gallery (529 Mowat Ave.) or at the door.
The shows will start at 7 p.m. on April 12-14, with the final show on April 15 starting at 2 p.m.
Richards is encouraging everyone to come out and support a good cause.
