Trim makes town fences safer

Anyone travelling past the Lions Millennium Park on Second Street East, or spending time at the slo-pitch diamonds at the St. Francis Sportsfields, over the past few weeks will have noticed they’re now surrounded with fences with bright yellow borders.
Airport and Parks Superintendent Bill Caul said the yellow edging is a safety device installed to protect children and others from scratching themselves on the tops of chain-link fences.
He noted the directive to put up the borders stemmed from an insurance audit of the town conducted last year. It was the only park-related safety issue to come out of the audit.
Town crews began installing the safety trim about two weeks ago, and now the edging has been put up at all of the town-owned playgrounds and ball diamonds with chain-link fences.
In some areas, the safety edging is quite extensive, such as at Lions Park, where it surrounds not only the playground area but also the fence separating the park from Shevlin Towers.
