The top high school curlers in the province will congregate here in just under two years’ time.
It was confirmed today that Fort Frances will be the site of the 2018 OFSAA curling championships—marking the first time since 1981 the community has hosted the event.
Fort Frances Curling Club president Ron Silver, also the Muskie boys’ coach and mixed co-coach, previously had noted Fort Frances had submitted a bid for the event that had gone uncontested at last report.
He had said if that situation remained unchanged, the community was in line to host it.
Both the Muskie girls’ and boys’ rinks advanced to the all-Ontarios this past season in North Bay, which also will host next year’s OFSAA championships.
The boys’ team of skip Chris Silver, third Daniel Vandenbrand, second Jason Bazylewski, and lead Davis Jackson won the silver medal.
The girls’ squad, skipped by Erin Tomalty and including third Tory Beaudry, second Anika Beaudry, and lead Andrea Schram, finished with a 1-3 record to miss the playoffs.
Vandenbrand and Schram will be the only members from each of their respective teams still in high school come the spring of 2018, barring any of their older teammates doing a “victory lap” year following Grade 12.
