Bladder Cancer Canada’s national board of directors has advised that Ferg Devins, a bladder cancer survivor and former National Walk Lead of Bladder Cancer Canada’s September awareness walk, took over the reins as chair for the organization effective June 14.
Current chair Ken Bagshaw will become past chair and maintain a seat on the board of directors.
Devins is a survivor of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer who underwent his surgery and treatments at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.
He is a communications strategist and held the position of Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Molson Coors Canada, prior to retiring from the brewery in December, 2013.
“I look forward to helping to make a difference in the lives of patients, raising awareness about bladder cancer and Bladder Cancer Canada, and looking at ways for the organization to increase support for important research initiatives,” said Devins.
“Our hope is that will completely eliminate bladder cancer some day.”
In addition to National Walk Lead, Devins started the Kenora Bladder Cancer Walk four years ago.
“Given my new responsibilities, I will be walking in Toronto in September, however, local survivors in Kenora are talking about a couple of fundraising initiatives and an opportunity to participate in a virtual walk [that month],” he remarked.
“I look forward to working with local survivors on continuing to raise awareness about bladder cancer in Northwestern Ontario, ensuring that people get the care that they require,” he added.
