Submit events to online calendar

Most Times’ readers know that to find out what’s going on in the community, they need look no further than the “Around town” feature each Friday in the Daily Bulletin.
But to get an even more long-term view of what’s happening in Rainy River District, they can go online at www.fortfrances.com, go to the “Quicklinks” sidebar, and click on “Calendar” to access an electronic schedule of events.
Right now, the calendar is updated mainly from events that are printed in “Around town,” but service clubs, organizations, and individuals are highly encouraged to submit their own events to be included in the community calendar, Times’ office manager Linda Plumridge said last week.
They can do so easily by clicking on a link from the online community calendar, she explained.
From there, information such as dates, times, admission costs, and a brief description of the event (if it’s not self-explanatory) can be submitted.
Plumridge noted these will be screened, as is the information put into “Around town” every week, so that events such as individual residents’ garage sales won’t be included.
“We’re looking for ‘community events,’” Plumridge stressed, explaining this could be anything from a Riverside Foundation fundraiser gala or a medical benefit dinner to children’s activities at the Fort Frances Public Library and registration days for sports activities.
While the online community calendar is useful for obvious reasons, Plumridge noted it came about after local resident Diane Maxey suggested last spring that such a calendar be devised to help those organizing events avoid scheduling conflicts.
She explained the online calendar is organized by month, week, and day, and so events happening in July or even December, for instance, can be submitted months in advance.
While the online community calendar has been a feature on the Times’ website since it was re-launched last summer, Plumridge noted no one has been submitting event information to it.
Instead, Times’ staff have been updating.
But since the Times can’t possibly know the date of every event coming up in the year, Plumridge said it would be very helpful for the public to submit their own information to help make it truly a “community calendar.”
To check out the online community calendar, and perhaps submit event information to it, go to www.fortfrances.com and look for the “Calendar” link on the right-hand side of the screen.
