The efforts of Crossroads students to make a difference in the world around them will be recognized by the Rainy River District School Board at its monthly meeting tonight.
This month’s recognition of excellence will be presented to the “Kids Care Club” at Crossroads, which was introduced at the beginning of this school year.
Having already participated in such things as food drives, the club even has split into junior and senior ones due to so much interest from the students.
Most recently, the club raised money to support the victims of the earthquake in Haiti through the “Coins for Haiti” initiative.
Over the upcoming month, the club has a number of service projects lined up, including making rag quilts and wooden Adirondack chairs (with the assistance of the high school) that they hope to raffle off during the school’s annual family barbecue in May to help support future projects and local community groups.
The students also hope to visit local food banks and soup kitchens to learn about the various agencies in the community that exist to help people in need.
Also at tonight’s meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. at Robert Moore School, the board is scheduled to hear a presentation on the Teachers Learning and Leadership Project by Superintendent of Education Heather Campbell.
Reports also will be heard from the Special Education Advisory Committee, policy committee, Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee, and finance committee, as well as trustee Judy Eluik, who sits on the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association and attended a public education symposium in Toronto in January.
Trustees also will be given an update on various capital projects, including construction of the new Robert Moore School and progress on Mine Centre’s future new school.
As well, there will be an update on the amount of money the board has saved through the Honeywell Energy retrofit project.
Education Director Jack McMaster also is slated to be speak about the 2009-10 annual operational plan update.
The board also is set to approve the modified school year calendar for 2010-11.
