Stressed walleye fishery protected

To protect a highly-stressed walleye fishery, the Ministry of Natural Resources is banning walleye fishing on the Black Sturgeon River from below the dam all the way to Lake Superior.
The ban will reduce angling pressure on a valuable remnant of Great Lakes walleye stock and will help the recovery of Black Bay walleye once habitat issues have been addressed.
Signs have been posted advising anglers of the fishing ban.
As well, conservation officers will be patrolling the area informing anglers of the regulation change.
Anglers still can catch a feed of walleye at other fishing locations in the area.
The MNR reminds the public that such measures are put in place to rehabilitate the species and protect the sustainability of walleye populations so anglers may enjoy the resource in the future.
