‘Squashers’ fare well at tourney


Six members of the Sunset Country Squash Club competed at the Silver Fox “Squash” Cancer charity tournament in Thunder Bay over the weekend.
In men’s ‘B’ play, Josh Councillor opened with a 3-1 win over Andreas Asmus (Sioux Lookout) before losing 3-1 to eventual champion Rick Gauthier (Thunder Bay).
Councillor then lost 3-1 to Mike Dorval (Thunder Bay) before falling 3-0 to Kerry Posselwhite (Thunder Bay).
In the ‘C’ division, Chris Bobczynski lost his first match to Dave Galloway (Sioux Lookout) by a 3-1 margin, who ended up claiming the title.
Bobczynski also lost his next match 3-1 to Lucas Kajijara (Thunder Bay).
Scott Basaraba, meanwhile, had a tough weekend in being defeated in all three of his matches, which included 3-0 sweeps at the hands of Erick Werner and Jeremy Bertoldo (Thunder Bay).
Basaraba’s last match was against Bobczynski, who ended by winning the ‘C’ consolation title.
In the ‘D’ division, Andrew Wiersema won both of his matches in Pool ‘A’ but then lost his match in the cross-over to Pool ‘B.’
His last match ended up being a 3-1 victory to wind up in third place.
And Selina Haltom placed took third in the women’s round-robin division.
In junior play, a much-improved Hunter Jean (Fort Frances) defeated Guiseppe Arearo (Thunder Bay) 3-2 and Gabriel Koester (Thunder Bay) 3-2 before claiming the title with a 3-1 victory over Bradley W. (Thunder Bay).
This tourney also completed the competitive season for the local club.
