Significant snowfall has created excellent snowmobiling conditions on land-based trails in the Voyageurs National Park region.
The Green Trail from Rainy Lake to Lake Kabetogama, and on to the Ash River Trail, is in fair-good condition.
Patches of slush are still present along the trail and winds have created snow drifts.
Two pressure ridges on Black Bay, and one on Lake Kabetogama north from Sphunge Island, are clearly marked.
Caution is advised.
Park staff have been evaluating ice and snow conditions, and have found areas of insufficient ice to open the Purple and Yellow trails as well as to extend the Green Trail to Crane Lake.
The Rainy Lake ice road also was not open as of Wednesday (Dec. 31).
Meanwhile, the Echo Bay Ski Trail, Tilson Connector Trail, and KabAsh Trail are open although the Black Bay Ski Trail remains closed due to thin ice present on both beaver ponds).
As well, the snowshoe trails at Blind Ash Bay, Sullivan Bay, and the Oberholtzer Trail are open.
