Show of unity

Local residents packed Council Chambers yesterday evening to listen to stakeholders voice their concerns regarding the potential sale of the idled mill here. Couchiching FN Chief Brian Perrault, bottom left, said he fully supports re-opening the mill because the land and resources should benefit both indigenous people and those who live in the Treaty #3 territory, adding it also would help a lot of young people who need work. Meanwhile, Rainy River Future Development Corp. chair Gordon Armstrong, bottom right, stressed the district’s resources belong to the residents and it’s up to the people to decide its future–not some outside corporation. At the end of the meeting, council voted to table a resolution pertaining to the mill to its regular meeting this coming Monday (Feb. 25) in order have more time to discuss how to proceed.
