A free information session on foot complications and diabetes will be held this coming Monday (Feb. 11) from 5-7 p.m. at the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau (old CN station).
The session, being presented by Bruce Hyder, a chiropodist with Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc., and Cindy Gauthier, an RN with the Valley Diabetes Education Centre here, will focus on prevention of foot complications in people with diabetes.
It also will provide helpful information on what to do when there is a problem, when to seek physician assistance, and when to ask for help regarding regular foot care.
“We’re encouraging people with diabetes and their families to attend,” noted Gauthier.
She explained that chiropody services are provided by Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc. on a limited basis at La Verendrye Hospital here.
She also added Monday’s session will be a good opportunity to meet the new chiropodist (Hyder).
“We hope to educate people in determining when chiropody is needed and how they can access the service,” Gauthier remarked.
Another important topic that will be covered is why people with diabetes are at risk for amputation.
“We’ll be addressing some of the complications that can lead to problems, however, the sooner the problem is detected, the better chance there is to prevent amputation,” Gauthier stressed.
Everyone is welcome to attend this session. Call 274-4828 to register.
