School board names math contest winners

Press Release

The Rainy River District School Board sponsored a Canada Day math contest for students in Grades K-12 as a way to honour Canada’s 150th birthday.
Students were asked to create a math problem appropriate for their grade level featuring a Canadian theme and that had an answer of 150.
Several classes took on the challenge while other students entered on their own.
Problems were judged based on originality, creativity, and complexity.
After receiving many submissions from across the district, the board’s STEM co-ordinators selected Alexis Latter (Robert Moore) as the winner in the primary division and Jesse Hagen (Sturgeon Creek) as the winner in the junior division.
Piper Edwards and Kylie Stafford (S.C.A.P.) were the winners in the intermediate division.
Prizes were awarded to the winners.
“We want to thank all the students who participated in the contest,” said STEM co-ordinator Brad Gushulak.
“We hope they found it a fun and unique way to demonstrate their math skills and creativity, and to celebrate Canada’s 150th.”
The STEM team is planning to run the math contest again next year and hopes even more students will enter.
