The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry laid 53 charges and also issued 41 warnings during a two-day road check station at the junction of Highway 502 and Highway 11, east of Fort Frances.
On June 22 and 23, conservation officers from the Northwest Region checked 2,069 anglers from Canada and the United States for compliance with the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and the Ontario Fishery Regulations.
Over the course of 34-consecutive hours, officers checked anglers for licences, for over-limits of fish, and for the possession of invasive or endangered species.
Officers also took the opportunity to educate the public on the adverse effects both of invasive species and of over-harvesting fish and wildlife.
Charges were issued for:
•packaging fish so they cannot be easily counted or identified;
•transporting live fish;
•having an over-limit of walleye and northern pike; and
•failing to stop for a conservation officer.
Warnings were issued for:
•failing to carry a licence;
•keeping more fish than allowed by a licence; and
•improper packaging and labelling of fish.
Roughly 150 pounds of fish fillets were seized during the operation and donated locally.
In addition, two investigations resulting from the road check are ongoing.
