As the 14th-annual Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship draws closer, planning already is underway for the “Daytime Land” portion of the event, this year headed by Michelle Cain, one of the tournament’s new directors.
“We really want it to be a big success this year with lots of things for children of all ages to do,” she noted.
Daytime activities will run from noon-6 p.m. on July 24-26.
So far, Cain and her small committee have secured a couple of inflatable play structures and a magician/clown from Thunder Bay.
“There will also be a lot of the regular things that have been there in the past,” she noted, citing activities such as face-painting, a sandbox dig, and a water table.
And, of course, there also will be a variety of contests—like pizza-eating and watermelon-eating—for children to participate in.
There even are plans to hold a road hockey or 3-on-3 basketball tournament if there’s enough interest.
“We just want the kids to be able to come and have a good time,” Cain enthused.
But she also admitted it’s difficult to know what other kinds of activities people would like to see at “Daytime Land.”
“So we’re asking people if they have any suggestions, so kids of all ages will have something fun to do,” she said.
Cain also is looking for volunteers who might have a talent, interest, or activity to share with the children—even for just an hour or two.
For instance, they have one volunteer who has offered to organize some science activities.
“It would be great to have someone do a storytime or sing-a-long or anything they’d like to do with the kids,” she remarked. “And if they like to work with children, it would be a great way to spend a part of the day.”
Cain said any local talent who would like to perform during “Daytime Land” would be an excellent addition to the lineup of activities.
She added other volunteers also are encouraged to help out since they will need people to monitor the games and other activities. High school students looking to fulfill some of their volunteer hours to graduate certainly are welcome.
“There is a lot involved in planning and preparing all of the daytime activities, so any help or suggestions people have would be appreciated,” Cain noted.
Businesses or organizations that might be willing to host an activity, or even donate some prizes for the games, would be greatly accepted, as well.
In other news, Beta Sigma Phi Alpha Upsilon is looking to hold a “Bass” baby contest (similar to its popular “Sweetheart” baby contest) during the FFCBC this year to showcase cute youngsters from across the district.
The contest will be open to babies 24 months or younger.
Parents will be asked to submit a wallet-sized photo of their child, with the first 20 entries being displayed during the tournament for people to “vote” on their choice for the cutest “Bass” baby.
Proceeds will go towards children’s activities or organizations in the area.
