Heavy rains and quickly melting snow resulted in widespread flooding and washouts across the District over the weekend. Clockwise from above, water washes over Hwy 602, east of Fort Frances; LaVallee Road North was closed to traffic due to washout conditions; water levels in ditches and fields along Highway 11 at the LaVallee bridge flooded low lying land. The flooding also caused hundreds of basements in the District to take on water, with some reports of up to two feet in some homes. McMunn and Yates staff reported selling more than two dozen pumps on Saturday morning, as residents woke up to flooded basements. Sewer pumps in Fort Frances were also compromised, resulting in sanitary sewers being pumped into tanker trucks, to prevent back-ups. A flood watch remains in effect, as ministry staff monitor large volumes of runoff travelling down the watershed. Residents who see areas of flooding are asked to tweet, using hashtag #ONFlood.
