It wasn’t easy to muster up smiles two days after suffering hockey heartbreak. But the Rainy River Community College Voyageurs women’s squad still managed a smile last Tuesday (March 15) at a homecoming reception at the college as they showed off the second-place trophy for their efforts at the American College Hockey Association Division 2 national championship in Kalamazoo, Mich. RRCC, with five Fort Frances residents on the roster, lost 2-1 in double overtime to the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in the gold-medal game after winning their first four outings at the tournament despite having only 10 skaters. The courageous crew included, front row, left to right: Shilo Beck (Fort), co-captain Micah Cabral, Katie Sinclair (Fort) and Stacy Nelson; back row, left to right: Shay Perry, Marissa Lindblad, head coach Jeff Wickstrom, Hailey Clendenning (Fort), co-captain Shelby Tymkin (Fort), assistant coach Stephen Briggs, Bridget Jorgenson (Fort), Ashley Jonson and Jordan Bright. Missing are co-captain Madeline Rog and assistant coach Larry Beck, also of Fort Frances.
