Samantha Kelly, Sean Schatull, and Teagan Friesen, students in John Cousineau’s Grade 1 class at St. Michael’s School, observed the reactions of little Madelyn Dent to toys and other obstacles yesterday morning during the “Roots of Empathy” program. The program works to create emotional literacy and prevent bullying amongst students by using the baby as a “teacher,” and having children observing her development and feelings over various visits. The program, which also runs in other schools throughout the district, is organized for St. Michael’s School by Rochelle Bird (right), the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness youth co-ordinator with the United Native Friendship Centre here.
