Voyageurs National Park shared a photo of a recent ice core sample from Rainy Lake’s Black Bay, showing seven inches of mostly slush ice, which they warn is much weaker than the one inch of clear ice at the bottom, and why they have not yet opened the lakes for snowmobile or vehicle traffic.
