By day’s end yesterday, Ontario will have over 600 fire personnel assisting with the forest fire situation in British Columbia.
While some FireRanger and support staff returned from British Columbia over the weekend, additional resources have headed west, including 122 fire personnel on Friday who have already been briefed and assigned to various locations in the province. Additional personnel flew out yesterday for British Columbia including 15 personnel trained in values protection equipment set-up, and 28 FireRangers.
One fire was reported in the West Fire Region over the weekend. Nipigon fire #33 was reported by anglers as burning on a small island on Juneau Lake about 65 kilometres northwest of Greenstone. FireRanger crews were hampered by bad weather for a day but were able access the fire site August 10. The lightning-caused fire is now listed as under control at 0.1 hectares in size.
Red Lake District reports heavy rain has resulted in rising water and FireRanger crews helping with flood assistance and sandbagging as required.
Fort Frances District did an aerial assessment over a small fire in Quetico Provincial Park.
The fire, which was being monitored as it provided ecological renewal within the park has now been declared “out.”
The forecast is calling for mainly sunny skies across the West Fire Region, with light winds and close to normal and possibly slightly above normal temperatures.
The fire hazard is “low” across most of the region but “moderate” to “high” in the far north.
