In recognition of the Orange Shirt Day, the Binesiwag Centre for Wellness in Fort Frances set up a table in front of Rainy Square and distributed orange masks and cupcakes.
Another event was held on Victoria Ave. by the Weechi’ttewin Family Services. They gave small meals of bannock and wild rice soup.
Both events, however, made sure to leave small brochures describing struggles the Indigenous people had to endure for decades in order to raise awareness and educate the public.
Orange Shirt Day has been taking place since 2013 when Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, a residential school survivor, told the story of how her new orange shirt was taken from her when she was admitted to a residential school.
The last residential school closed in 1996.
