New judoka face competition

A lot of new faces from the local judo club got a taste of tournament action at the Lake of the Woods Judo Invitational in Kenora on April 27.
And while veteran judoka took home most of the medals, those coming home empty-handed still put in solid performances.
“There were a lot of the younger ones who got a real look at other competition,” said club co-coach Les Wiersema. “We gave them a big pat on the back for working hard.
“They all made us very proud.”
Among those who competed but finished out of the top three in their respective weight classes were Colin Angus, Cody McMahon, Julie Barkley, Hannah and Mike Kennedy, and Jesse and Gavin Moorhouse.
Joining the winner’s circle were Jared Catholique-Bruyere and Cale and Brittany Hayes, who each won gold, and Tamara Catholique-Bruyere and Cody Carmody, who both won silver.
More than 240 competitors from the region and Manitoba competed at the event. Besides Wiersema, the local club was assisted by Kim Kozik and Chuck McDonald.
The club, which had just over 30 students this year, is now wrapping up its season. It will start up again in September.
