Talk about opening with a bang.
The Muskie girls’ hockey team used a four-goal performance from Issy Taylor to rout the Kenora Broncos 14-1 in their NorWOSSA regular-season opener Tuesday night at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Jill Calder added a hat trick in the lopsided victory.
It was all Muskies from the outset as they got goals from Taylor (two), Calder (two), and Paiten Kinnear to take a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Things didn’t get any easier for the visiting Broncos (1-1) in the second frame as Calder tipped in a shot to put the Muskies up by six.
Kianna Antonick then netted a short-handed goal after a Broncos’ turnover.
But Kenora was able to get on the board on that same man-advantage.
Kira Boucher skated the puck out of the corner and bulled her way to the front of the net unimpeded before jamming the puck past Muskie goalie Isabella Fortes to trim it to 7-1.
But on a goal-mouth scramble later in the frame, Makenna Henttonen found the loose puck and knocked it in before Marti Woods fired a centering pass home from the slot to make it 9-1 after 40 minutes.
Henttonen found herself on a breakaway early in the third and she made no mistake in going upstairs on Broncos’ goalie Trista Boulette to help the black-and-gold reach double-digits.
The Muskies then got tallies from captain Emily Kaun, Taylor (two), and Antonick later in the frame to cap the scoring.
The black-and-gold next will be in action this Tuesday (Nov. 20) when they visit the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints in Kenora.
As for the Muskie boys’ squad, they will be in Warroad, Mn. on Saturday for some exhibition games, then will open their regular season on Tuesday in Kenora against the Saints.
