If any warnings were issued about hunting “eagles” out of season, the Muskie court teams weren’t paying attention.
The black-and-gold took three of four matches from the visiting Dryden Eagles in NorWOSSA action here yesterday.
It was a toss-up between which Muskie team was more impressive.
The Muskie senior boys’ basketball team (2-2) easily played its best league game this season in hammering Dryden 81-52 for its first win in three tries against the Eagles.
“Defence was certainly the key,” said co-coach Bryce Coyle.
“Dryden was playing a little shorthanded and the guys were playing hard on defence, at least right through the first half,” he noted.
Four Muskies hit double digits in scoring, led by Aaron Bujold with 19 points.
Cole Kowalski added 15, Kobi Ward netted 12, and Joey Angus chipped in with 10.
Meanwhile, the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball squad (3-1) stunned the reigning 15-time NorWOSSA champion Eagles in a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-23, and 25-13).
“We kept our errors to a minimum,” said co-coach Amy Wilson-Hands, referring to the centrepiece of the win over Dryden (4-2).
“Our aggressiveness on defence was key to taking the game in three sets.”
The Muskie junior spikers (3-1) had bumpier road to victory but still eked a 3-2 triumph against Dryden (25-20, 17-25, 18-25, 25-12, and 15-10).
“In the last two sets, we found a lineup that played for each other and limited mistakes in bunches,” Muskie coach Bob Kowal said after Fort High pulled closer to first-place Dryden.
“We just weren’t consistent in the first three sets.”
And the Muskie junior boys’ hoopsters looked in position to make it a clean sweep here yesterday—claiming its first halftime lead in NorWOSSA play with a 29-27 advantage.
But the Eagles exploded for a 22-4 run in the third quarter that propelled them to a 59-50 triumph.
“We are getting better and better every game,” said Muskie head coach Angela Petsnick, whose team is 0-4 but had its closest league loss of the season.
“We had a very strong first half, but just lost their momentum halfway into the third and we just couldn’t get it back.”
Sean Huziak had 14 points to pace the Muskies while Caleb Allan added 12.
Due to exams, all four teams don’t resume NorWOSSA action until Feb. 7 when the Kenora Broncos visit Fort High.
