Muskie rinks land first, second seeds

Both Muskie curling rinks are getting some serious respect ahead of their biggest challenge of the season.
The girls’ foursome of skip Erin Tomalty, third Tory Beaudry, second Anika Beaudry, and lead Andrea Schram landed the top seed in the 20-team field at the OFSAA championships, which get underway Monday in North Bay.
The Muskies were the beneficiary of the Sioux Lookout Warriors, last year’s NWOSSAA girls’ champ, having won gold at OFSAA, thus increasing the weight given to the Fort High for capturing the NWOSSAA title this season.
Also part of Pool ‘E’ will be the second-ranked Haliburton Highlands Red Hawks, third-seeded Lawrence Park Panthers (Toronto), fourth-ranked Markham Marauders, and the fifth-seeded Maxwell Heights Mustangs (Oshawa).
The three other top-seeded teams are the A.N. Myer Marauders (Niagara Falls) in Pool ‘F,’ the Bishop Allen Cardinals (Etobicoke) in Pool ‘G,’ and the Bishop Reding Royals (Milton) in Pool ‘H.’
Each pool is seeded Nos. 1-5, unlike for other OFSAA sports, where teams are seeded from No. 1 all the way through to the final team in the field.
Tomalty and the Beaudrys have previous OFSAA experience after being part of skip Hailey Beaudry’s team in 2014.
Schram is a first-time participant.
The Muskie girls begin play Monday at 1 p.m. (all times CST) against Markham.
Fort High then has two games Tuesday against Lawrence Park (7 a.m.) and Haliburton (1 p.m.) before closing out round-robin play against Maxwell Heights on Wednesday (4:30 p.m.)
In the 20-team boys’ division, the Muskie rink of skip Chris Silver, third Daniel Vandenbrand, second Jason Bazylewski, and lead Davis Jackson nabbed the No. 2 seed in Pool ‘D.’
All of them are making their first OFSAA appearances, with the last Muskie team to make it being the Isaac Keffer rink back in 2011.
The Bishop Allen Cardinals (Etobicoke) are the top-ranked team in their pool.
Rounding out Pool ‘D’ are the third-ranked Frank J. Hayden Huskies (Burlington), the fourth-seeded Richview Saints (Etobicoke), and the fifth-ranked Vincent Massey Mustangs (Windsor).
The other top-seeded teams include the Almonte Thunderbolts in Pool ‘A,’ the Ecole secondaire catholique Theriault Flames (Timmins) in Pool ‘B,’ and the Donald A. Wilson Gators (Whitby) in Pool ‘C.’
The Muskies face Frank J. Hayden on Monday at 10 a.m. in their only game of the day.
Then it’s a doubleheader on Tuesday as Fort High plays Bishop Allen (10 a.m.) and Vincent Massey (7:30 p.m.)
They wrap up pool play Wednesday against Richview (10 a.m.)
The top two finishers in each pool for both the boys and girls will advance to the quarter-finals, which will go later Wednesday.
The semi-finals and finals are set for Thursday.
