The Rainy River District detachment of the OPP is reminding motorists to drive in accordance to local road conditions.
Winter driving is hazardous enough on its own, but combine speed with poor visibility, icy roads, or night driving and you have a recipe for a collision.
The Rainy River District OPP investigated 74 property damage motor vehicle collisions in November—a 57 percent increase from October.
There were five personal injury collisions, which remained the same from October.
Some 47 percent of the collisions involved a wild animal. In 95 percent of those collisions, the wild animal was a deer.
Alcohol was a factor in three collisions.
Sixty percent of these collisions occurred between dusk and dawn, and 19 occurred over a five-day period when weather was a factor.
The majority of collisions are avoidable. Slow down when driving on icy roads, leave more distance between your vehicle and others, and be prepared for slippery intersections.
Slow down at night or other times when visibility is poor, and always drive according to road conditions.
Be aware and alert of animal presence near roadways. Never drink and drive.
Following these simple rules will greatly reduce your chance of being involved in a collision.
