An automated fire weather station in the Red Lake District was discovered with severe damage caused by vandals, resulting in thousands of dollars in damaged equipment, and compromising the gathering of critical weather information required for forest fire management.
The damaged weather station is located at an old mine site in Red Lake district. A review of recorded data from this station leads weather analysts to suspect that the vandalism occurred sometime around midnight between Friday, June 27 and Saturday, June 28.
Rocks and PVC pipes were used to damage or destroy a rain gauge, temperature and humidity sensors, a satellite modem and a solar panel that provides power to the station.
Police have been contacted to investigate.
If anyone has information regarding this vandalism they are asked to contact the Red Lake Fire Management Headquarters (807) 727-2000
