The Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society Publications Awards were handed out at the Thunder Bay Museum on Sunday, Jan. 4 and among the winners was Fort Frances native Neil McQuarrie.
The Gertrude H. Dyke Award for popular full-length writing went to Neil McQuarrie for his 2007 book, “A Bit of a Legend in These Parts: The Life of Betty Berger Lessard” (NJM Enterprises, 2007), and Jim Lyzun for the 2007 book, “Aviation in Thunder Bay” (The Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society, 2007).
The George B. Macgillivray Award for popular article writing went to retired Vancouver journalist Bob Ingraham for his piece, “Sgt. Joe Hicks’ War,” in Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society Papers & Records XXXVII (2007).
The J.P. Bertand Award for academic article writing went to Michel S. Beaulieu for his article, “‘We did it just for fun’: Amateur Filmmaking at the Lakehead, 1929-1930,” in Ontario History XCIX:2 (Autumn, 2007): 168-189.
The Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society’s Publications Awards are given out for the best publications dealing with the history of Northwestern Ontario.
These awards are intended to help publicize such works, to recognize the excellence of local writers, and to encourage new authors to write about our history.
The awards are made by independent panels of judges.
