In the spirit of James Naismith, the Canadian who invented basketball in 1891, the “Fun in the Sun” committee is hosting a 3-on-3 tournament for students in Grades 6-8 on Canada Day.
But those with hoop dreams had better act fast if they want to play–the deadline to register is Thursday at the latest.
The tourney, which will start at 1 p.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous, is being organized by former Muskie player Justin Anderson, who has returned to Fort Frances to take the reins from his father, Doug, and uncle, Blair, at Betty’s.
Anderson said he had two teams signed up as of this morning, but would like to have at least six.
Seven or eight would be ideal.
While the deadline has been advertised on posters as being tomorrow (June 28), Anderson said he’ll give teams until Thursday to sign up.
The fee is $5 per player.
Teams may consist of only boys, only girls, or be mixed.
Ideally, Grade 6 teams will play against Grade 6 teams while Grade 7-8 teams will play each other, but it depends on the turnout.
Prizes will be awarded.
Anderson said he was excited to see Muskie senior boys’ basketball co-coach Bryce Coyle start up the Canada Day 3-on-3 tourney last year, and picked up the torch this year when Coyle, a new father again, was unavailable.
“I wanted to keep it going,” noted Anderson, adding he would have loved to played in such a tourney when he was younger.
“It gives kids another of sports to do in the summer,” he reasoned, adding he might consider running another 3-on-3 tourney in the future.
