Fort Frances Youth Soccer’s annual wind-up will go ahead as planned this Saturday, organizers said today.
“There’s some deep wet spots on Fields 3 and 4 [the mini-fields by St. Francis School] but most of it looks good,” said FFYS vice-president John Pierce.
He added there also were plenty of playable areas on the main fields and the one next to Muskie Field.
Games, featuring Division II-V teams, will start at 9 a.m.
Meanwhile, the wind-up for Division I (ages six-seven), originally scheduled for Monday and yesterday, will be moved to Saturday from 12:15-1:15 p.m.
Kathy Cuthbertson, a FFYS committee member in charge of food service, said this year’s wind-up won’t be serving hotdogs due to the short notice
“It’ll just be difficult to cook on those fields,” she said. “We’ll serve pop, chips, hot rods. Anything quick and pre-packaged.”
FFYS is finishing its 13th year with just over 650 players between the ages of six and 16.
In related news, Megan Ross, convener of the adult mixed slo-pitch league, cancelled all remaining games this week, saying the outfields of all three diamonds at St. Francis were still “unplayable.”
“Just for this week. It’s more or less to help the fields recovers from the terrible rainfall and for safety,” Ross said, adding they’ll keep an eye on the conditions before making a call on Monday’s games.
The St. Francis Sportsfield saw its first recreational action last night since the heavy rainstorms earlier this week when a men’s soccer league game between Tagg’s and ITS was played (ITS won 6-2).
