Over the weekend, six local bowlers, a coach, and a team manager travelled to Azilda, just outside Sudbury, to participate in the provincial round of the Northern Ontario Youth Challenge.
Back on Oct. 21, 16 local bowlers had travelled to Atikokan to bowl in the zone round. They competed against other youths from Kenora, Dryden, and Atikokan to see who would make up the team to represent Sunset Country at the provincials.
After bowling five games, the bowlers awaited the results.
The top five bowlers in each male and female category made up the men’s and ladies’ teams.
The next two bowlers in each category made up the mixed team, with the bowler after them with the highest score filling the last berth on the mixed team.
Ashley LaFreniere and Caitlyn Townson made the ladies’ team along with three other females from Dryden while Travis Bois and Lyle Dolph made the men’s team along with two males from Dryden and one from Atikokan.
Tyler Good and Tylyn Silander made the mixed team along with three other bowlers from Dryden.
Last Thursday, the six local bowlers, coach Carolyn Stamarski, and team manager Jeanie Townson travelled 18 hours to participate in the provincial round on Saturday.
The participants had to bowl against other bowlers from the five other zones across Northern Ontario.
After the long bus ride, the bowlers rolled their best. Sunset Country came in fifth place overall with 25.5 points, with North of Superior taking home the aggregate banner (43 points).
The bowlers enjoyed the trip as well as the activities that were planned for them away from the lanes.
In related news, Jeff Watts, formerly from the Fort Frances YBC, bowled in the tournament representing Cambrian North.
He came in first to make the provincial team that will represent Northern Ontario at the national showdown in March against other bowlers from across Canada.
