“Get Outdoors” club members braved the minus-37 C wind chill this past Saturday to go on a ski hike in Burriss.
After travelling across a field in the howling wind, the young skiers entered a bush area, where there was some relief. But even out of the icy blast, conditions weren’t much better.
The deep chill numbed feet and left white blotches on exposed skin. Bared hands became frostbitten in seconds.
However, the group continued on despite the discomfort.
About halfway along the trail, a fire was lit. Everyone warmed up and enjoyed a snack.
With renewed energy, they headed back—only to find the wind was stronger than before in the open fields and they had to face it head on.
After struggling against the wind and through small drifts, with the snow lashing their faces, they finally arrived at the vehicles, where frozen eye lashes and numb hands were thawed out.
But rather than getting into warming vehicles, the group stood around and talked before heading home.
