The future is now for the Muskie cross-country running team.
Fort High put four runners in the top 10 to easily capture the Grade 7-8 girls’ team title at the annual “Turkey Trot” yesterday in Dryden.
Ashlyn Beck was the fastest of the Muskies in the 3K event, coming in with a time of 13:51 to finish second in the 53-runner event behind only Marlie Ilott of the Kenora Broncos (13:14).
Greta Fedoruk finished third (14:05), with fellow Muskies Jaida Norris placing sixth (14:54) and Grace Kowal in 10th (15:16).
That quartet accounted for the Muskies’ team total of 18 points, which is calculated by adding together the placings of the top four finishers from each school in the same race.
The Atikokan Voyageurs were well back in second place (35) while the St. Joseph’s School Bulldogs of Dryden settled for third (53).
Two other Muskies who made the top 20 were Kianna Antonick in 13th (15:56) and Emma Toriseva in 19th (16:29).
Aurora Hutton wound up 29th (18:25).
Liam George was another podium finisher for Fort High, grabbing second place in the boys’ 5K Open category (20:15).
Mike Braun of the Dryden Eagles easily topped the 21-runner field with a sizzling time of 18:34.
Muskie Romeo Deafy took ninth place (22:29) while teammate Ben Olsen was 14th (24:09).
Despite a tough day for some of its veterans, the Muskies still secured the team silver medal with 35 points—well behind a dominant Eagles’ team that won the category (10).
Corrin Kuzemchuck led a Dryden sweep of the top four spots with her gold-medal time of 21:27.
Rookie Tori Toriseva outshone her older Muskie teammates by dashing to seventh place out of 31 starters in the girls’ 5K Open division (23:19).
Kennedi Handberg captured 10th place (25:45.01).
Other Muskie results included Gabi Peters in 12th (25:48), Tory Beaudry in 13th (25:58), Syd Beck in 18th (27:00), Jessica Steele in 20th (27:15), and Shaelyn Tuesday in 27th (29:57).
The Muskies return to action this Tuesday (Oct. 11) for the Hial Pike Invitational at the Falls Country Club.
