The Rendezvous Yacht Club is starting to see more boats come out for its bi-weekly races, including a season-high nine for the annual Canada Day regatta here last Saturday.
Colin Hewitt (“Ariba”) won the race with a corrected time of 115.84 while Jas Spencer’s “Beagle” took second in 119.47. Bob Algie and his “Salty Dog” finished third, followed by Lonnie Parson’s “Vixen.”
Jack Bartlett’s “Mad Hatter,” in his first race of the season, wound up in fifth place.
Warren Wagner (“Slug”), Todd Hamilton (“Through”), Tim Mack (“Nite Moves”), and club commodore Eric Rude (“Stray Cat”) rounded out the final placings.
The Canada Day regatta’s route is double the size of the regular races, with the average finishing time being around two hours. Hewitt said the race was a challenge because there were “blustery north winds of over 20 knots.”
Since winning his first race two weeks ago, Hewitt and his vessel have been on a mini-roll, taking victories in this race and the second-last regular race of the spring series this past Tuesday.
He had spent most of the off-season getting his used model race-ready.
In the Tuesday race (moved from the regular Wednesday night due to the July 4 holiday across the river), Hewitt posted a corrected time of 58.43 to edge Bartlett (61.8) and Hamilton (65.46).
Finishing fourth through seventh were Spencer, Rude, Algie, and Quinn McCarthy (“Sedna”).
The club’s spring racing series will wrap up next Wednesday, with the first of the eight summer series races set for July 19.
The club also have been holding community sail nights every Tuesday for anyone interested in getting a free firsthand experience in the sport.
Just show up at the Rendez-Vous dock at 6:30 p.m.
