Yacht club hoping for good turnout

The Rendezvous Yacht Club will be holding its annual Sandpoint Island race this Saturday, starting at the Thunderbird Lodge across the river.
It will be the first big event of the sailing season, though the club’s regular spring series has been going on for about a month now.
There is no pre-registration for the race, with the club hoping to get at least five boats out for it, said Diane Wessels.
Each vessel will carry two-five crew.
A captains’ meeting is slated for 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the boats to be at the dock by 11:30, Wessels noted.
The race will be handicapped based on the type of boat entered.
The boat judged to be the fastest will start the race, with each captain given a certain route to follow.
If the first boat hasn’t reached the first checkpoint by a set time limit, it may be determined there is not enough wind to continue and that checkpoint will become the new finish line.
Weather conditions permitting, the club plans on having the sailboats circumnavigate Sandpoint Island, Wessels said, adding they’ll try to finish the race around 3 p.m.
