After being cancelled late last week, the women’s local soccer tournament is on again as part of this weekend’s “Borderland Ball Blast ’99” with the surprise addition of a Dryden team.
But organizer Caroline Spencer warned as quickly as the tournament was reinstated, it can be axed again if Dryden opts not to make the trip here.
The tourney also will feature taggs and two combined teams made up of players from the local women’s league.
The tournament will kick off with the fourth-annual exhibition game between the present-day Fort High girls’ soccer team and Muskie alumni this Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Francis pitch.
The game will feature former Muskie players from as far back as the first team some 13 years ago.
Muskie head coach Struchan Gilson will head the alumni squad while Spencer, an assistant coach with the black-and-gold last year, will lead the younger team.
In related news, the men’s soccer tourney this weekend will feature a full slate of nine teams split into three pools. The top team from each pool will advance to the semi-finals along with a wild-card.
Three teams from Dryden, two from Thunder Bay, and one from Kenora will play against three local teams.
Tournament action for both the men and women will start Saturday at 8 a.m. The ‘B’ finals will be played Sunday at 2:30 p.m., followed by the ‘A’ finals at 4 p.m.
