Women’s league playoffs underway

Every serve, every spike and every save was just a little more important.
The Fort Frances Women’s Volleyball League kicked off its post-season at Fort Frances High School last night, with nine of 10 teams beginning their playoff drives.
Nine-time defending league champion Gillons’, who finished second in the regular season, was the only squad not on the court at some point last night. Last night’s two-set matches involved the other five of the top six teams from the regular season grouped together in A pool competition, while the bottom four teams squared off against each other in the B pool. Only those in the A pool are in contention for the league championship.
In A pool action, Sabaskong and the Wildcats split their two sets, with Sabaskong advancing on the basis of points for and against. Scared Hitless, the regular season champions, then defeated Sabaskong 2-0, while the Die Hards shut out the Power Paks 2-0.
The Wildcats, Sabaskong and the Power Paks drop into the A side consolation pool. The double-elimination format of the playoffs allows the eventual survivor from that pool to remain in the hunt for the league title, along with Scared Hitless, the Die Hards and Gillons’.
In the B pool, the Squirts defeated the Rookies 2-0, while the Mixed Nuts blanked the Placers 2-0.
The Rookies and the Placers then battled to avoid playoff elimination, with the Rookies coming out on top 2-0.
Playoff action continues next Thursday at 7 p.m. at Fort Frances High School.
