The SIJHL announced Monday that Sioux Lookout Flyers’ goalie Jesse Wilkins has been named Pizza Hut player-of-the-week for the period ending Jan. 9.
In two games last week, Wilkins stopped 77 of 80 shots he faced in nearly 125 minutes of action, helping his squad pick up three of a possible four points in the SIJHL standings while posting a 1.93 goals against average and a .963 save percentage.
The 18-year-old Calgary, Alta. native began with a 40-save performance while backstopping his team to a 2-1 victory over Dryden last Tuesday (Jan. 4), earning first star laurels in the process as he helped snap the Ice Dogs’ league-high eight-game winning streak.
One night later, he was solid once again, making another 37 stops in allowing the Flyers to salvage a point in a 4-3 shootout setback at Dryden.
On the season, Wilkins is third among all SIJHL goalies in save percentage at .912,
Fort Frances Lakers’ forward Byron Katapaytuk was among the honourable mentions for the award.
