The Brandon Wheat Kings were crowned the 2004 national Midget champions yesterday afternoon at the Kenora Recreation Centre after an exciting 2-1 overtime victory against College Charles-Lemoyne from Quebec.
Brandon and College Charles-Lemoyne were very evenly matched as each time they met, the games were decided in overtime.
Wheat Kings captain Taylor Langford scored the winning goal with just 12.9 seconds left in the first overtime.
Brandon won its first-ever national championship—and were the first Manitoba team to ever win a medal at the championship.
As for College Charles-Lemoyne, this silver medal was their first. They also have won one gold medal (1998) and one bronze (2002).
Earlier yesterday, the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs (Pacific) defeated the host Kenora Stars 5-2 to win the bronze medal.
