West End Motors wins ‘C’ title

West End Motors took top honours in the ‘C’ division of a Tom Thumb (novice) hockey tournament in Kenora last weekend, beating the KFC Colonels 6-1 in the final.
The Fort scored four times in the first period, then added two more in the second frame to seal the victory.
Nathan Calder opened the scoring with a pair of goals, then Joe Basaraba and Brandon Legarie added singles to make it 4-0.
Cam Cranston got the Colonels on the scoreboard in the second period but Myles Kakeeway and Basaraba tallied later in the frame to ice the game.
The third period was scoreless.
West End Motors opened the three-day tournament on a losing note with a 12-2 defeat at the hands of Red Lion. Calder and Legarie netted the Fort’s lone goals.
But the Fort squad bounced back in their second game, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit to beat Petro Canada 5-3.
Basaraba led the way with a hat trick, with Legarie and Steve Romaniuk netting the other goals for West End Motors.
The Fort kept their winning ways going in their third game of the tournament, downing Tim Hortons 5-2 on goals by Legarie (two), Jordan Sinclair, Shane Beck, and Basaraba.
West End Motors couldn’t make it three-straight when they fell 3-2 to the Subway Sharks. Beck and Legarie tallied both Fort goals in the first period but they couldn’t get on the score sheet after that.
But the Fort earned a berth in the ‘C’ final with a convincing 7-2 win over Red Lake Gold Corp. in their fifth game.
Legarie and Calder gave West End Motors an early 2-0 lead but Red Lake roared back when Steven Bowman netted a pair of goals before the first intermission.
It was all Fort Frances after that, though, as they exploded for five goals in the second frame to put the game away. Kakeeway sparked the outburst with a natural hat trick.
Basaraba and Legarie (his second of the game) rounded out the scoring.
The third period was scoreless.
